Updated October 2026: In 2025 Defqon.1 had 14 stages: Red, Blue, Black, UV, Magenta, Indigo, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Purple, Green, Orange, Pink and White. Q-dance will show which stages there are in 2027 when the lineup is released. Read more about the lineup.
Have you also wondered about the difference between all the music styles in HDM? It is not easy to learn to hear the different genres, and the writer of this article has more than once (...) stood at completely the wrong stage for quite a while, only to realise later that either the stage had switched for the day or I had simply ended up in the wrong place. Today there are many subgenres of our music, and at most bigger festivals such as Defqon.1, Decibel and Intents they are split across different stages. Below you can see how the Defqon.1 stages have been divided in recent years.
Which colors are there and which genres do they represent?
Red = All HDM, but with a focus on hardstyle
Examples of artists who might play there: Headhunterz, Keltek, Coone
Blue = Raw Hardstyle
Examples of artists who might play there: Warface, Rejecta, E-Force
Indigo = XTRA Raw Hardstyle
Examples of artists who might play there: The Purge, Unresolved, Riot Shift
UV = Euphoric Hardstyle
Examples of artists who might play there: Da Tweekaz, Darren Styles, Wasted Penguinz
Magenta = Early Hardstyle / Classic Hardstyle
Examples of artists who might play there: Luna, DJ Isaac, Charly Lownoise
Gold = Early Rave / Millennium Hardcore
Examples of artists who might play there: Mental Theo, Endymion, Re-Style
Black = Hardcore
Examples of artists who might play there: Angerfist, Mad Dog, Korsakoff
Silver = Industrial Hardcore / Crossbreed / Breakcore
Examples of artists who might play there: The Outside Agency, The Satan, Hellfish
Yellow = Frenchcore / Terrorcore / Speedcore
Examples of artists who might play there: Spitnoise, F.Noize, Billx
Purple = For upcoming artists and new talent in the HDM scene
Green = Previously Crossbreed / Breakcore / Industrial & Hard Techno, then a relax and chill-out area, in 2025 a music stage again
Former stages:
Orange = Previously Hard Trance / Q-Dance Radio Area, back again in 2025
Brown = Previously Jumpstyle / Tek, no longer exists
White = Previously Subground / House / Techno, later Freestyle / Jumpstyle / Tek, back again in 2025
Grey = Previously Early Rave, no longer exists
This year's lineup with all stages and days is published on the official Defqon.1 website. There are even more subgenres than the ones we have listed here, and we could go on forever describing them. Artists within the different genres also have different opinions on what is "typical". The music keeps evolving: what was called hardstyle in the early 2000s is not what we think of as typical hardstyle today, but rather early hardstyle. Rawstyle is still a fairly new subgenre, but it has already developed several subgenres of its own. It is complicated, but fun to geek out on.
